History

It is located in the city of Ternopil in Ukraine. The institute was founded in 1957. In 1997 it received the status of medical academy, and in 2004 that of a university.

Rankings and reputation

The Ukraine Ministry of Health has ranked Ternopil State Medical University first among the medical universities in Ukraine. It has been awarded the IV (highest) accreditation level by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Teaching staff

The pedagogical staff numbers 408 teachers, including 71 Doctors of Science, 59 professors, 124 associate professors, and 261 Candidates of Science. The staff includes one Corresponding Member of AMS of Ukraine, 8 Honored Workers of Science and Technology of Ukraine, 3 Honored Inventors of Ukraine, and 4 Honored Physicians of Ukraine.

Teaching

The student population of the faculty is over 3000, including more than 1000 foreign students.Classes usually consists of 8-12 persons. There are 10 lecture-halls equipped with modern demonstration apparatus. Practical classes and seminars are held in the laboratories and thematic classrooms, while clinical training takes place in the wards and the laboratories of functional and instrumental diagnostics. Since 2006 the “Z-system” of training has been introduced, by which students in their first years learn clinical aspects together with theoretical subjects. Different departments are located at different locations around Ternopil city.

A typical class is held from 9 to 3 pm. Languages of instruction are Ukrainian, English, and Russian.

Qualifications

Ternopil State Medical University is listed in the FAIMER (International Medical Education) directory under ECFMG and the WHO (World Health Organization) directory of Medical Universities/Schools. TSMU’s degree is recognized by WHO, US Education Department, General Medical Council of England, and in EU countries.

Since 2005 students are assessed according to the European Credit Test System (ECTS) credit-module system, which will allow the diplomas granted by the University to be converted in all countries of the European Union.

Faculties

The university contains the following faculties: Medicine (6 years – MD program), Dentistry (5 years), Pharmacy (5 years), and Nursing (2–4 years). Postgraduate programs are also offered in different fields.

The theoretical departments of the faculty occupy four educational scientific institutes, which are independent structural-functional subdivisions of the University: Institute of Morphology, Institute of Biomedical Problems, Institute of Modeling and Pathologic Processes Analyzing, and M. Skakun Institute of Pharmacology, Hygiene and Medical Biochemistry. There are 12 clinical departments, based at city and regional medical establishments in Ternopil.

Postgraduate education

Postgraduate can study for  Master’s Degree or a PhD. Other continuing education includes a Training Internship Program, and provision for clinical specialization.

Vacation activities

International summer schools have involved students from the University of South Carolina, Moscow State University, Kazakh Medical Academy, Shlyonsky Medical Academy (Poland), National Pharmaceutical University (Kharkiv). The university also offers students a chance to travel abroad for student exchange programs during summer.

Ternopil State Medical University is the first university in Ukraine to adopt the American Nursing Program. In the American Nursing School and International Nursing School, teaching follows the American Nursing School curriculum. TSMU collaborates with the University of South Carolina Upstate (USA) to exchange academic programs for nursing students. The Nursing School offers two degrees:

Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) – two-year program
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) – four-year program (or two years for those who already have a nursing degree)
After graduation students are eligible to take the National Council License Examination (NCLEX) and Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) for registered nurses to start working and living in USA. After obtaining associate degree, students can transfer to USA for bachelor’s degree.

Duration of Courses

To become physician in medicine, you need to complete a strict 6 year curriculum. The degree will lead to Doctor of Medicine. The Doctor of Dentistry includes studying a 5 year learning curriculum. In order to gain the degree of doctorate in Pharmacy, one has to complete 5 years of studies.After completing bachelors, students are given opportunity to go for post graduate degree which ranges from 3-6 years.
The courses are conducted in English, Ukrainian and Russian medium of language.

Studying Conditions

Training of foreign students is conducted as per plans and syllabus of the university. After graduating, the foreign students receive degrees of international pattern certifying that they acquired the education of a definite qualification degree in accordance with educational system structure existing in Ukraine.

Extracurricular Activities

36 kinds of sports and 75 sports groups are available at the University. Sports teams perform at the premier league level. Over 60 students are the record breakers and prize winners of the Olympic Games, World and European Championships.
Three SSU students were part of Ukrainian national team in the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London; and six SSU students participated in the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. They were awarded with gold medals in biathlon relay race, and bronze medals in boxing and biathlon sprint.
At the ХХVІІ World Winter Universiade Dmytro Rusynov won gold in the individual race, silver in the mass start and bronze in the mixed relay as the part of Ukrainian national team. At the ХХVІІІ World Summer Universiade three SSU students as part of Ukrainian national team won silver in volleyball. Bohdan Yadov and Tetiana Levytska won bronze medals in judo. At 2015 European Games Artem Khomula won bronze in judo.
According to results of Student Games and the Championships of Ukraine, SSU is in the TOP-3 universities among higher education institutions, and it occupies the high position among all universities in Ukraine.

Vinnitsa National Medical University was established in 1994. There are an academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, 5 academicians and 5 members-correspondents of Academies of Science, 120 doctors of science, professors, 554 candidates of science, associated professors. It was established in 1996 to acknowledge the need of the specialists along with the vision of providing higher education, especially in support of human welfare and social reforms. Initially the University enrolled a modest number of students, but later on in 2000, comprehensive operation started after the infrastructure was in place.Black Sea National University has acquired the fourth level of accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Graduate foreign students of the university, having degrees & diplomas are legalized by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
